2019 Toyota Avalon NH

Now in its fifth generation, the Toyota Avalon is reinvigorating the all too often stale sedan class. The 2019 Toyota Avalon rocks a complete makeover, with key highlights focused on a new engine, better fuel efficiency, a now unmistakable exterior protecting an enviable interior, along with the latest safety, comfort, and convenience features. A staple of the sedan segment, the new Avalon should inspire more innovation within the class, if that is, its competitors want to keep up. Available late spring 2018, the 2019 Toyota Avalon is priced to start at $35,500.

Beautiful Redesigned Exterior

Unlike too many entrants in the sedan segment, the 2019 Toyota Avalon is unmistakable in style and spirit. Guided by key concepts, “Authenticity” and “Exhilaration,” Toyota’s team of designers and engineers focused the 2019 Avalon’s new look on performance and an exciting, driver-centric experience. Just one look at the TNGA platform reveals the Avalons leaner, longer, and lowered stance, resulting in the widest Avalon yet.

Thanks to new stamping methods, the made-over Avalon is all about shape and sculpting, and the design team didn’t miss a detail. Between draw panels, door handles, and rocker panels, the 2019 Avalon looks more like a top-dollar luxury sedan that belies its affordability.

With respect to dimensions, the Avalon’s rear cabin now extends by an additional 7 inches, with the side quartered glass and tapered C-pillar now 2.2 inches larger. Add in the 0.31-inch radius corner and the result is the tightest yet for Toyota.

A bit shorter than its predecessors, but sporting wider front and rear tracks, in addition to a wider wheelbase, the 2019 Avalon is the sportiest of its kind to date. Other aesthetic details that signify the new Avalon’s sportiness include elegant all-LED projector headlights, grilles and vents designed for optimal aerodynamics, and a lightweight aluminum hood, to name a few stand-outs. A feature fellow drivers will surely notice exists in the Avalon’s “aero fin” designed LED tail lamps, which include stop, backup, and turn signals in one sleek presentation.

Offered in an all-new XSE trim, the 2019 Avalon also features in Touring, and upscale XLE and Limited models. For those determined to stamp cutting-edge design with a smaller carbon footprint, the new Avalon also comes in three hybrid options: XLE, Limited, and XSE.

Dependent upon potential driver’s preference and personality, the 2019 Toyota Avalon can reflect a more understated elegance, as seen in the chrome-bordered XLE and Limited options, complete with machined-silver LED headlight bezels, wheels measuring either 17 or 19 inches, and chrome-tipped dual exhaust. Or, one might opt for the Avalon’s unapologetic aggressiveness presented by the XSE and Touring models, which are distinguished by Gloss Black wheels, a piano black mesh grille, black headlight bezels to match, black badging and trunk lid spoiler.

Current and former Avalon drivers will appreciate some familiar exterior shades, available on the new Avalon, including Celestial Silver Metallic, Midnight Black Metallic, and Parisian Night Pearl. However, Toyota has introduced two new colors to its vehicle lineup -- Opulent Amber and Harbor Gray Metallic. Brand new, Avalon-specific offerings are found in Ruby Flare Pearl and Wind Chill Pearl.

All-New Interior Experience

Although Toyota’s design team was determined to create a driver-centric experience, passengers in the 2019 Toyota Avalon might argue that they were, in fact, the priority. Thanks to the exterior design and overall structure, the new Avalon provides ample space for passengers seated in both the front and back seats. But it’s the back seats that worth mentioning, specifically. Boasting segment-best measurements in shoulder room (57.1 inches), leg room (40.3 inches - V6; 40.4 - Hybrid), not to mention headroom (37.5 inches - V6; 37.1 inches - Hybrid), the Avalon’s inner beauty is further enhanced by available comfort and convenience features like seat warmers, air vents, and USB charging stations. The center, foldable armrest includes device and cup holders for both passengers.

The entire cabin is covered in soft-touch materials, easily accessible controls, and plenty of amenities. Regardless of trim, the 2019 Avalon’s interior is enviable. Differences between models exist mainly in materials used. For example, while the XLE makes use of engineered wood trim, passengers will find real wood trim in the Limited model. Aluminum details and Perforated Ultrasuede seats, available in gray or black, are shared by the Touring and XSE, with Softex seats reserved for the XLE in gray, beige, or black. The Limited trim is available in gray and beige, along with the brand new color for 2019 -- Cognac.

Returning to Toyota’s driver-centric Avalon ambitions, check out the 9-inch multimedia system, complete with audio, navigation, and climate control. Underneath, a slide-open eBin houses a 12-volt plug and wireless Qi mobile charger. Three USB ports (the Avalon includes a total of 5 USB ports) are built into the center console, and drivers will find the cup-holder/phone cradle useful during their commutes.

The Avalon’s 7-inch Multi-Information Display (MID) provides drivers with access to vehicle information, vehicle settings, turn-by-turn navigation, and two new menus, featuring a digital speedometer and digital tachometer for Hybrid variants. Opting for the Limited or Touring model returns the segment’s biggest color Head-Up Display (HUD), measured at 10-inches and complete with critical data like speed, navigation, and drive mode.

Similar to your cell phone, the 2019 Toyota Avalon features a new capacitive touchscreen, measuring 9 inches, boasting a faster refresh rate, more precise voice recognition, and shaper recognition of gestures and commands.

For the first time ever and as one of the first manufacturers to do so, Toyota will integrate smartwatch and Amazon Alexa connectivity into the Avalon’s Toyota Remote Connect feature. Now, drivers are able to start the Avalon’s engine, lock/unlock doors, and even take a peek at fuel levels from their Alexa-enabled device or smartwatch.

Boasting the most speakers in the sedan segment, the 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited and Touring come with 14 speakers standard, in addition to Entune 3.0 Premium Audio. There are also plenty of inaugural applications from Toyota that can also be equipped on the XLE and XSE options.

Great Performance and Efficiency

The 2019 Toyota Avalon is powered by one of two available TNGA powertrains. The first, a 3.5-liter V6 (2GR-FKS) engine, matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission and generating 301 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, was designed to balance increased power with better fuel efficiency. Those with greener ambitions might opt for the 2.5-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder Toyota Hybrid System (THS II), featuring a 650-volt electric motor (A25A-FXS), supported by a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), and able to produce a total 208 horsepower.

Reportedly already boasting best-in-class fuel economy, the new Avalon gets between 25-26 mpg, depending on trim level, while the Hybrid variant offers an impressive 43 or 44 mpg -- a significant boost over last year’s Hybrid, rated at 40 mpg.

Aerodynamics are enhanced in the new Avalon, courtesy of the rear spoiler, panel coverage along the underbody and front tangential vents, resulting in a better coefficient of drag compared to last year’s Avalon, 0.27 Cd, versus 0.28 Cd.

Given what we know so far about the 2019 Toyota Avalon, the rest of the sedan segment should start making strides to keep up or risk getting left in the dust.
