Toyota's Electric C-HR Returns With 338 Horsepower and a Fresh Attitude

Toyota's bringing back the C-HR nameplate after a four-year break, and this time it's gone full electric. The 2026 model ditches the gas engine for dual motors pushing 338 horsepower, making this compact crossover quicker than you'd expect from a subcompact SUV.

  • Dual-motor all-wheel drive delivers 338 horsepower with a 0-60 time of around 5 seconds.
  • Estimated 290-mile range from a 74.7-kWh battery with DC fast-charging capability.
  • Two trims available (SE and XSE) with coupe-like styling and modern tech features.

Bold New Electric Look

Walk up to the 2026 Toyota C-HR, and Toyota's new "Hammerhead" design language hits you right away. Sharp, C-shaped daytime running lights bracket an angular front fascia featuring a slim grille and a wide air intake. Pronounced ridges run across the hood, while large protrusions sit behind those distinctive running lights.

Along the sides, a raked roofline gives this crossover a sporty profile. Prominent body lines run the length of the doors with rugged cladding at the bottom. Around back, triangular taillights are connected by a horizontal bar, sitting above a chunky rear bumper with a diffuser-style element. Wheels are available in either 18-inch or 20-inch sizes, depending on the trim.

New colors called Overcast and Tandoori join familiar options like Cement, Midnight Black Metallic, and Wind Chill Pearl. Spring for the XSE trim and two-tone paint becomes available with a black roof paired with Tandoori, Cement, or Wind Chill Pearl.

Modern Cabin With Real Tech

Inside, this crossover shares its layout with the updated bZ models. A tiered dashboard holds a large 14-inch touchscreen positioned in front of the dash rather than recessed into it. Digital instrumentation sits deep in the dashboard above the steering wheel, and horizontal air vents span the width of the cabin.

A floating center console design creates a modern feel. Toyota included dual wireless charging pads as standard equipment, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Rear passengers get their own USB ports and separate climate controls. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel come standard on both trims, making those cold New England mornings more bearable.

Seat materials vary by trim. Base SE models feature fabric upholstery with SofTex bolsters, Toyota's synthetic leather. XSE buyers receive full SofTex with synthetic suede trim, along with ambient lighting, an available panoramic fixed-glass roof, driver's seat memory, and an 8-way power-adjustable passenger seat. Sound comes from either a standard six-speaker setup or an optional nine-speaker JBL system.

Performance Meets Practicality

Every C-HR runs a dual-motor setup with one electric motor at each axle, creating standard all-wheel drive. The combined output reaches 338 horsepower, and Toyota quotes a 0-60 mph sprint of approximately 5 seconds. That's quick for a vehicle this size. Steering wheel-mounted paddles allow you to adjust regenerative braking across four levels, helping to maximize range during daily driving.

Battery capacity sits at 74.7 kWh, which should deliver around 290 miles per charge. An 11-kW onboard AC charger and NACS charging port provide access to Tesla's Supercharger network, as well as thousands of other DC fast-charging stations. Battery preconditioning warms the pack before charging sessions, helping to speed up charging in cold weather. Plugging into a DC fast charger takes you from 10 percent to 80 percent in about 30 minutes under good conditions.

Safety Tech Comes Standard

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across both trims. Pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, and lane tracing assist are all included. Road sign recognition and Toyota's Proactive Driving Assist system are also standard, along with blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking assist with automatic braking.

XSE models add traffic jam assist, lane change assist, front cross-traffic alert, and a panoramic view monitor. A safe exit alert warns rear passengers about approaching traffic or cyclists when opening the doors.

What It'll Cost You

Official pricing hasn't dropped yet, but expect the base SE trim to start slightly above $30,000, with the XSE trim landing around $35,000. That puts it in competition with the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV, and Volvo EX30. Dealerships are expected to receive the C-HR sometime in early 2026.

Cargo space behind the rear seats measures 25.4 cubic feet, solid for a subcompact crossover. The rear seats fold in a 60/40 split for accommodating longer items. The overall dimensions measure 177.9 inches in length, 73.6 inches in width, and 63.8 inches in height, offering more interior room than the compact footprint suggests.
