Interior and Exterior Size Comparison

First, let’s take a look at the size of both of these vehicles. They are in the large car segment, so size is a big factor in making a decision. You want a vehicle to be large enough that it is comfortable for you and all your passengers.

For overall dimensions, the 2019 Toyota Avalon is 195 inches in length, 72 inches in width and 58 inches in height. If you compare that directly to the 2019 Nissan Maxima dimensions you can see they are just a little bit different. The Maxima is 193 inches in length, 73 in width and 57 in height. Do those couple of inches make a difference? Let’s check out the interior.

The Toyota Avalon has a passenger volume of 102.3 cubic feet. This includes dimensions like 39.2 inches of second row legroom. Overall, this gives you the space and comfort you want whether you are in the first or second row. The Avalon also gives you a trunk that has 16 cubic feet of space.

The 2019 Nissan Maxima has a passenger volume of 98.6 cubic feet. The Maxima gives you 34.2 inches of second row legroom. For trunk space, the Maxima gives you 14.3 cubic feet of cargo space.

As you can see, the 2019 Toyota Avalon is a bit bigger than the Maxima providing you with more overall passenger volume and more space where it counts like the second row legroom and the cargo space. Here it is pretty clear that the 2019 Toyota Avalon beats out the Maxima in terms of the size comparison.

Performance Comparison

Next, let’s take a look at the what’s underneath the hood. The Toyota Avalon gives you a 3.5-liter V6 engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine gives you 268-horsepower, so that is more than enough capability for this car.

For fuel economy in the Avalon, you get 21 miles per gallon in the city and 30 miles per gallon on the highway, which is very good for a car this size. Also, the 2019 Toyota Avalon is easy to drive and handle with its very precise steering. It is also very comfortable, especially on those long highway drives.

Under the hood of the 2019 Nissan Maxima, you will find a 3.5-liter V6 engine. This engine is paired with a continuously variable transmission. This engine will give you 300-horsepower, which is quite a bit for this size of vehicle.

The fuel efficiency for the Maxima is actually the same as the Avalon. This vehicle gets 21 city miles per gallon and 30 highway miles per gallon. Overall, the handling of the Maxima is pretty good, but there are some areas that leave something to be desired. With some trim levels the Maxima tends to understeer and it needs more steering effort at low speeds.

The performance of these two vehicles is similar. The fuel economy is actually the same; both of these vehicles come with above average fuel efficiency. The Maxima has a bit more horsepower here, but the tradeoff is slightly worse handling than the Avalon.
