2019 Toyota Prius vs. 2019 Chevy Volt

Toyota Prius vs. Chevy Volt

If you’re in the market for a hybrid vehicle, then most likely you’ve been doing some research on both the 2019 Toyota Prius vs. the 2019 Chevy Volt - arguably two of the most popular hybrids on the market today. If you’re having difficulty deciding which hybrid is the right hybrid for you, a quick comparison between the two vehicles should effectively highlight the key differences between the two, allowing you to choose the car that is best suited to your needs.

Of course, most comparisons between the hybrids focus solely on the performance of the cars, while overlooking critical comparisons between the safety and standard interior amenities between the models - comparisons that prove even more important once you realize the price points of the Prius and Volt.

Below, we’ll take a look at the safety and interior amenities included in both the base and top-trim models so that you can make a well-informed, well-thought out decision regarding the 2019 Toyota Prius vs. the 2019 Chevy Volt.

Safety

No matter if you choose the 2019 Toyota Prius or the 2019 Chevy Volt, you won’t have to worry about sacrificing or compromising on safety as both models have terrific safety ratings. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named both models Top Safety Pick+ choices, and while the 2019 Chevy Volt has yet to undergo testing, it stands to reason it will also enjoy top honors. Likewise, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave both vehicles five-star overall safety ratings, proving that both the Toyota Prius and the Chevy Volt really are two of the safest cars on the market.

And while crash testing and overall safety scores are important, you can’t overlook the advanced safety features that can be found in both models. This is where you will also start to find some pretty critical differences between the Prius and the Volt - namely that one of the models comes standard with a whole suite of advanced safety technology, including a rearview camera, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and forward collision warning. And one of the models simply comes with a rearview camera and Teen Driver safety technology. So if having top-notch safety features is important to you, then you should probably consider the 2019 Toyota Prius.

Of course, it is possible to equip the Volt with advanced safety technology - you’ll just have to pay extra for it, and depending on which of the Chevy Volt trims you choose, those extras can really add up. If you choose the base model Volt LT, budget at least $790 to add the LT Driver Confidence package in order to access rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, rear parking sensors and blind spot monitoring in your Volt. If you opt for the Volt Premier, budget at least $495 for the Driver Confidence package that includes lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert… although, really, at that point you should tack on the Driver Confidence II package to fully equip your car with forward collision alert, lane keep assist and a following distance indicator.

While an additional $800 or so may not sound like a huge price to pay for advanced safety technology, keep in mind that the base model 2019 Chevy Volt has a starting MSRP of $34,095, while the base model 2019 Toyota Prius starts at $23,475 - and that price includes most of the same advanced safety features that you’ll have to splurge on if you choose the Volt.

It’s obvious that both cars are tremendously safe vehicles - even without the additional safety tech. But if you’re looking for a car that offers a true commitment to safety without having to pay extra for it, then it’s clear that the 2019 Chevy Volt simply cannot compete with the safety and value of the Toyota Prius.

Interiors

We’ve already discussed that the Chevy Volt is available in two trims: the Volt LT and the Volt Premier, but what we haven’t mentioned are the seven different trims available for the Prius. Obviously, the Prius trumps the Volt when it comes to trim choices, but let’s compare the base models and see which one offers the best starting off point.

The 2019 Chevy Volt LT comes standard with great features including keyless entry and ignition, automatic climate control, remote start, Bluetooth, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, OnStar connectivity, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite radio functionality, a six-speaker sound system and an 8-inch touchscreen display. The base model 2019 Prius One comes standard with heated mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, a 6.1-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, voice recognition, an auxiliary jack, a CD player, a USB port and a six speaker audio system, which means the two base models are more or less similarly equipped - the biggest difference is the more than $10,000 difference you’ll pay if you choose the base model Volt over the base model Prius.

What about the very top-of-the-line trims? Well, for $38,445 you can drive the Chevy Volt Premier and enjoy all of the features of the LT, plus a wireless charging cellphone pad, an automated parking system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front and rear seats, an eight-speaker Bose sound system, and a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel. You’ll also have the option to add in optional packages - such as the aforementioned safety suites.

Compare that to the top-trim 2019 Prius Four Touring, which starts at $30,015 and includes a wireless charging pad, a seven-inch touchscreen display, heated front seats, foglights, imitation-leather upholstery, navigation, Entune-app integration, satellite and HD radio and the option to add features, such as a sunroof, head-up display, or self-parking technology. While the Chevy Volt certainly offers some fantastic features, the Toyota Prius easily holds its own and at a fraction of the cost of the Volt.

2019 Toyota Prius vs. 2019 Chevy Volt - And the Winner Is...

It’s hard to find flaws with either the 2019 Toyota Prius or the 2019 Chevy Volt, but when it comes down to advanced safety features, standard creature comforts and value for money, it’s clear that buyers who opt for the 2019 Toyota Prius are the overall winners.
