Will There Be an All-Wheel Drive Prius?

Next month, Toyota will be debuting something big: the 2016 Prius will be the first car in Toyota’s lineup to feature something called the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. TNGA will become the standard, global platform for all Toyota cars and SUV’s over the next several years. What this means is that, by 2020, the Camry, Corolla, Prius, Yaris, Avalon, RAV4, and Highlander will all run on the same platform, with interchangeable components such as the drivetrain. The implications for this change are huge; it would make it feasible to have an AWD Prius and Camry, for example. The other major benefit to this strategy is that is allows Toyota to increase its economies of scale across its global supply chain. Because Toyota will just be building TNGA platforms instead of Camry platforms, Prius platforms, RAV4 platforms, etc., Toyota will be able to buy the materials and component parts and assemble them into TNGA platforms in a more cost-effective manner. Toyota is ever mindful of the fuel efficiency requirements under the new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, and this new platform will play a role in helping Toyota achieve its goals The very first nameplate to feature TNGA will be the 2016 Prius, which arrives next month. The 2016 Prius Prius has a more modern look, complemented by striking body lines; the creases in the rear fenders and doors are particularly elegant. The Prius remains very aerodynamic, and is rated at 54 mpg on the base model, and 58 mpg on the Prius Two Eco trim level! With a starting MSRP of $25,260, the Prius will compete directly with mid-size sedans that only get around 35 mpg.

Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid the Best SUV on the Market?

Toyota expects to sell 400,000 RAV4’s next year, of which 50,000 (12.5%) will be Hybrid models. The biggest draw of the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid model line is that it will be an AWD vehicle that gets 34 MPG. Plus, it will be backed by the incredible reputation for quality and reliability that has made the RAV4 so wildly popular. The RAV4 Hybrid is available in two trim levels: XLE AWD and Limited AWD. Both of these vehicles are powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder hybrid engine with 194 net horsepower and 206 lb/-ft. of torque. The RAV4 Hybrid has best-in-class combined and best-in-class fuel economy. It also delivers more horsepower, faster acceleration, and better fuel economy than the conventional RAV4 lineup. The all-new RAV4 Hybrid will feature updated exterior styling, including a new front end from the hood line down, as well as standard roof rails, and front and rear skid plates. The Hybrid Limited trim level will come standard with chrome outside door handles. When you sit in the RAV4 Hybrid, you will notice the refined cabin, including more soft touch surfaces and improved materials throughout. Thicker padding on the lower dash provides a soft and luxurious tactile experience. Take this RAV4 for a spin and you will notice that the cabin is quieter than ever thanks to increased sound insulation. In addition to a thicker sound insulation layer, the silencer area has been expanded by 55%. An anti-vibration rubber cushion mounting has been adopted to reduce the drivetrain noise and vibration in the cabin. As far as technological goodies are concerned, the RAV4 Hybrid boasts such available amenities as a 7-inch touch screen (a 4.2-inch screen comes standard), Bird’s Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan, and Connected Navigation through Scout GPS link. A Power Tilt and Slide Moonroof comes standard on both the XLE and Limited trim levels. Toyota Safety Sense is the latest safety technology developed by Toyota and comes standard on both the RAV4 Hybrid XLE and RAV4 Hybrid Limited. Toyota Safety Sense features a pre-collision system, dynamic radar cruise control, auto high beams, pedestrian detection, and lane departure alert with steering assist. For additional safety, all RAV4 Hybrid models will come standard with Hill-Start Assist Control and Trailer Sway Control. Front and Rear Park Sonar and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert both come stand on the Hybrid Limited and are each available options on the Hybrid XLE. The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid delivers improved ride and handling, thanks to several adjustments to the suspension and steering. The front suspension features a MacPherson strut with stabilizer bar and hydraulic shock absorbers. The rear suspension is a double-wishbone configuration with coil springs, trailing arms, stabilizer bar, and hydraulic shock absorbers. The steering feel is more direct, thanks to a tapered structure for both the suspension member and surfaces of the steering gear box, which produces more rigidity (and less play) for an enhanced driving feel.

2015 Scion iM Comes to NH this Fall

The Scion iM will be a sporty "hot hatch" that will appeal to a wide audience. Scion has announced an all-new hatchback model called the iM, which is slated for a fall 2015 release date to enter the very competitive “hot hatch” segment. The iM is based on the Toyota Auris, a hatchback that is popular in Europe, but which has not yet come to America. The Scion iM will feature the same tried-and-true 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine that powers the Toyota Corolla, and will have your choice of two transmissions: continuously variable (CVT) or 6-speed manual. The iM has strong visual cues such as LED daytime running lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, an aero kit, and an overall sleek design. Aside from the choice of transmission, there will be no factory options available; like its sibling the Scion iA, the iM will feature “mono-spec” trim. Mono spec trim means that there will be a generous number of standard options included but that there will not be a higher trim level available from the factory. The MSRP will be $18,460 for the manual transmission and $19,200 for the automatic. Standard options for the mono-spec trim include a 7-inch touch screen with Pioneer audio system, 17-inch alloy wheels, chrome tipped exhaust, piano black grille treatment, LED daytime running lights and LED taillights, heated exterior mirrors with LED turn indicators, dual-zone A/C, integrated back-up camera, engine immobilizer, hill-start assist, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. As is tradition for the Scion brand, numerous Scion parts will be available after the sale. So if you want to upgrade your navigation system or add TRD performance accessories, be sure to contact the Parts Department of your local Scion dealer. Caranddriver.com praised the interior design, stating that it is, “clearly derived from the Toyota family and looks great.” Scion has been playing up the fact that the iM will be “pet friendly,” with the options to add a tether, door guards, pet seat barrier, and even a pad to deter your dog from standing on the center console.

2016 Toyota Tacoma Revealed

Toyota just unveiled the hot new 2016 Toyota Tacoma at the Detroit Auto Show! The Tacoma is one of the most popular pickup trucks of all time, so Toyota had a lot to live up to with the redesign. One of the biggest changes for the 2016 Tacoma is that it will receive a new V6 engine, with 3.5L of displacement compared to the outgoing 4.0L model. The new 3.5L V6 is expected to produce 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. It will also offer such features as hill start assist, crawl control, an automatic limited slip and locking rear differential. On the exterior, the 2016 Tacoma is starting to dress more like its big brother, the Tundra. The Tacoma nameplate will be stamped directly on the sheet metal of the tailgate. Wheels will be available in both 16-inch and 18-inch configurations. In terms of fit and finish, the new Tacoma is expected to have a quieter cabin than the outgoing model, thanks to a floor silencer pad, multi-layer acoustic windshield, sound-absorbing headliner, and enhanced seals. In keeping with the new era of social sharing, every single Tacoma will now come standard with a GoPro mount located near the rear-view mirror. So whether you are off-roading, getting a job done, or just going for a scenic drive, you can record and share your Tacoma experience with all your friends.
